Overview

12 month fixed term contract

This is an opportunity for someone starting their career in human factors to work at the Rail Safety & Standards Board with a team of ergonomists, occupational psychologists, and applied psychologists. You will be involved in helping to deliver the full breadth of our human factors work and will be provided with different development opportunities including training courses, conferences, mentoring and coaching provided by members of our team.


Our areas of work include:

  • Supporting the design and introduction of new and innovative technology
  • Developing innovative ways of training and developing staff such as VR and AI
  • Collecting and analysing human factors data to support industry decision making
  • Providing advice and guidance to help industry improve safety culture and manage change
  • Providing human factors advice for a range of different risk areas in rail such as train operations, passenger safety, track working, trespass and suicide, maintenance and depot working, road risk, fatigue, health and wellbeing, and asset integrity
  • Applying human factors methods and techniques to understand and solve human factors problems
  • Leading and supporting industry research projects and the development of industry safety standards

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical input to human factors work assigned to you, ensuring that the work satisfies the expectations of the recipient in terms of scope, technical quality, and timely delivery.
  • Deliver human factors products and services to a high quality, agreed timescales and budget, under supervision of a senior member of the team.
  • Be proactive in learning and developing your skills and knowledge in the field of human factors. 
  • Ensure the quality review for your work is planned, undertaken, and documented.
  • Support project managers in ensuring project risks are anticipated, recorded, reviewed, and mitigated and that any emerging issues are escalated.
  • Ensure all requests for advice and/or clarification by industry are carefully considered and responded to objectively and in sufficient detail to satisfy the originator’s enquiry.

Qualifications

  • Qualified in psychology or Human Factors/ ergonomics to degree level (at least a bachelor’s degree with a 2:2).
  • An interest in developing the skills to deliver training programmes offered by the Human Factors Team.
  • Willingness to be involved and help delivery a variety of different human factors projects
  • Keen desire to develop expertise in the field of Human Factors and support the delivery of products and services provided by the Human Factors Team.
  • Demonstrate an analytical thinking ability, distilling the important aspects of problems and issues. Able to apply creativity and diligence to finding solutions or resolutions to working projects and situations.
  • Ability to research, synthesise ideas and present these in a way that is understood and accepted by our internal and external stakeholders.
  • Able to deliver training modules and facilitate a workshop effectively with support from more senior team members.
  • Able to effectively conduct an interview face to face or via virtual or telephone call with support from more senior team members.
  • Communicate effectively and share thoughts and ideas through methods appropriate to the audience.
  • Adapt and respond effectively when embracing new opportunities, change and in navigating uncertainty.
  • Actively contribute as part of a team and work towards achieving team goals and outcomes.
  • Take responsibility and demonstrate accountability in completing tasks and achieving objectives, actively seeking to resolve problems and identify opportunities.
