Tomorrow’s tech on show

Health-tracking smartwatches, and jewellery and scanners that fit into a toilet were just some of the gadgets revealed at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The annual event showcases the latest advances in tech with from large and small firms, and gives a glimpse of what we could be using in the future.

This year’s healthcare highlights included the Nowatch, which monitors a user’s heart rate, sleep, temperature and movement. Instead of a touchscreen display, it uses a circle of gemstone – which means users can’t actually use the it to tell the time. Its Dutch manufacturers describe is as an ‘awareable’ instead of wearable and claim it can help with mindfulness and reducing stress.

Also on show was the Evie ring, a piece of jewellery which can monitor physical signs such as respiration rate and track ovulation and menstruation in women. The information can be fed into a smartphone app which offers personalised advice on lifestyle changes.

And more health tech was unveiled with the Withings U-Scan device, which can be fitted into a toilet and analyses the user’s urine. It can measure daily levels of vitamin C, ketones and pH, as well as menstrual cycles, and send the results straight to the user’s phone.
