Space to thrive

The challenge of persuading workers to return to the office is one that still faces many companies who want staff back on site after the pandemic lockdowns. Using strategic design that creates a range of different spaces suited to how individuals prefer to work could be the key to creating more comfortable and productive workplaces, and get more workers back into the office.

An article from WorkLife claims organisations have seen significant shifts following “thoughtful workspace redesigns”, including one company which saw 80% of workers choose to be in the office every day.

One of the main issues identified by office workers is privacy, with two thirds claiming it was their top concern in a survey. Solutions such as modular furniture, acoustic panels and screens can help create more comfortable spaces that help people focus. Biophilic design – using nature, natural lighting and plants – is also highlighted as another way to create an environment that’s more attractive than working at home.

Speaking to WorkLife, Allan Smith, from office furnishings firm Steelcase, said: “I’m a different person than you are, we all have different needs throughout the day. So how do you let people manage their own levels of privacy that they need to do the work?”
