Elf and safety

With Christmas fast approaching, running out of wrapping paper or overindulging in mince pies aren’t the only risks that come with the festive season. Kieran Doona, a member of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management, has taken a tongue -in-cheek look at how Santa stays safe and some of the risks he faces on his global gift delivery mission.

There are the hazards of working under pressure, fatigue from long hours and working at height on rooftops – and what about the strain of lifting all those presents? Occupational safety concerns including working in confined spaces such as chimneys, driver distractions at the helm of his sleigh and workshop injuries among the elves.

Plus, there’s also health risks to be aware of, such as working across time zones, disrupted sleep patterns and the potential for excess weight gain from all the cookies and mince pies left out for him.

Kieran said: “Safety, health and wellbeing are taken very seriously by Mr Claus, who takes every precaution to protect the reindeer and elves from harm. He adheres to International Sleigh Operations standard ISO 1225: Global Sleigh Operations and Reindeer-Powered Aviation Safety.”
