Breathing more easily

A new self-contained breathing apparatus could help firefighters by easing their physical load and making them more comfortable. Up to 70% of firefighters are thought to suffer from musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), with the physical nature of their work contributing to the risk. They also use essential lifesaving equipment which can protect them in dangerous situations but can also cause discomfort.

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is one of the most important pieces of kit and can weigh up to 18kg – placing a strain on the firefighter’s body. Researchers aimed to design an alternative SCBA that would be comfortable to wear and reduce the risk of MSDs.

They created a prototype – referred to as SCBANovel – which included a new support structure, improved shock absorption and gave space for air to circulate between the wearer and the equipment. Ten volunteer firefighters tested the new design during a series of monitored tasks.

The finding, published in the journal Ergonomics, showed the new design “provided significant benefits in improving comfort and reducing musculoskeletal load” compared to a traditional device.

It added: “The SCBANovel pack reduced muscle activity in the trapezius and erector spine muscles and significantly reduced pressure on the shoulders and lower back.”
