Cavendish Nuclear Human Factors and Ergonomics capability applies scientific knowledge of human behaviour as well as cognitive and physical considerations and limitations to inform engineering, design and safety. This enables the balanced development of engineered systems with appropriate consideration of the human component of capability. Early and effective engagement with Human Factors (HF) can de-risk designs and mitigate sources of human error; optimise system and process performance; and reduce costs by best accommodating human capability and behaviours.
The Cavendish Nuclear HF capability provides specialism in Human Factors Integration (HFI) and Human Error Analysis. Both of these help provide confidence and support to Design Assurance and Safety Substantiation. The team works across all design phases in support of engineering designs and safety case work, and is involved in the production, review and update of key project deliverables, in addition to providing HF advice through the option selection and multi-disciplinary review processes.
Typical HF activities include:
- Early Human Factors Analysis
- Human Factors Integration Planning and Delivery
- Task Analyses
- Human Reliability and Error Probability Analysis
- Human Machine/Computer Interface Design and Assessment
- Manual Handling Assessment
- Control Room and Workspace Design / Assessment
- Workstation Design / Assessment
- Requirements Analysis
- Working Environment (thermal, noise, lighting) Assessment
- Organisational Competence Framework
- Human Factors Issues and Risks management
The Cavendish Nuclear HF Capability provides support to smaller projects and items of work but also operate within larger multi-disciplinary teams. The nature of HF work can be both providing short specialist nuclear consultancy type support, or integrated capability into longer and larger programmes of work.
Cavendish Nuclear is part of Babcock. Our Human Factors experts work alongside HF specialists within Babcock Nuclear, Babcock Mission Systems, and Babcock International.
Cavendish Nuclear Ltd specialises in providing Human Factors expertise to the Nuclear Industry, in the areas of civil decommissioning, defence, clean energy and technology. Cavendish Nuclear Ltd also has an international presence with key regions such as the USA, and Japan.
With the ability to draw on the multi-disciplinary resources of the wider Cavendish Nuclear Ltd team (E.g., safety case, design engineering, waste, and decommissioning management), as a capability, we can provide a holistic Human Factors approach.
HF Team members hold degrees in human factors, psychology, physiology, and other closely related disciplines; with professional membership through the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIHEF). Our human factors team has diverse multi-sector experience, with team members having worked in the defence, aerospace, nuclear, software design, healthcare, recycling, and automotive industries. We can deliver human factors activities across whole design lifecycles from initial concept and requirements, through to commissioning, in service and decommissioning.
Our expertise includes but is not limited to:
- Human Factors applied within the Civil and Defence Nuclear Sectors;
- Human Factors Integration strategy, planning and management;
- Human Factors Engineering support to major projects across the full lifecycle (concept-decommissioning);
- Safety Assurance and Safety Case support;
- Qualitative and quantitative Human Reliability Assessment (HRA) and Human Error Assessment;
- Development and review of procedures and work instructions;
- Ergonomic design and assessment of Control Rooms and workplaces;
- Human Machine Interface (HMI) and alarm system design and assessment;
- Safety Culture assessment and improvement;
- Improving work outcomes through sociotechnical system analysis;
- Workload assessment, Fatigue Risk Management, and safe staffing studies;
- Human Factors training; Risk management, musculoskeletal disorders, behaviour change, together with fatigue and stress
At Cavendish Nuclear Ltd, we understand the demands of complex and large-scale projects and emphasise Human Factors delivery management to facilitate successful end user acceptance and the optimising of human resources to maximise project operating costs.
