12 week introductory program to human factors (UHBW)

Healthcare clinical or non clinical staff interested in human factors.
Why should you attend?
Human factors is recognised by national healthcare bodies and regulators as desirable to support the safety, efficiency and wellbeing of those using and working within healthcare provider organisations.
What will you learn?
You will learn the fundamental principles of human factors and understand how to apply this knowledge to inform improvement work and risk management. The sessions will introduce you to a human factors method or tool each week with support to try and use in your workplace.
Expected outcomes
A basic understanding of human factors and a systems approach to apply and address real world healthcare problems.
Course content
Introducing the concepts of a systems approach and understanding everyday work based around the structure provided by the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS). This will include the theory that supports how to look at work environments, equipment, teams and organisational influencers.
Assessment
Participants are asked to present a case study illustrating an understanding of one or more human factors principle and an appropriate method/tool within a live or recorded 10min presentation.
What’s included?
A one and a quarter hour teaching session via Teams. This session will be delivered twice within the week to provide some flexibility for participants and increase attendance. The sessions will be recorded for those unable to join. Attendance via Teams is encouraged to support the engagement and sharing of information across participants. To complete the program there is a requirement to attend live via Teams for 75% of the course content to obtain the award.
Additional material is provided for each weekly session to support the learner and promote additional independent learning. This is in a multimedia form and accessed via an online platform.
About your UHBW
University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) is a large teaching hospital employing approximately 15,000 staff. The human factors faculty at UHBW has two qualified Ergonomists and support from others studying human factors at Master’s level. The faculty aims to provide developmental opportunities for UHBW staff and integrate human factors across our organisation. We deliver education to clinical and non clinical staff. Within the faculty we have experience with working across the breadth of healthcare including: acute medical and surgery, emergency and rehabilitation services, physical and mental health, pharmaceutical and essential support services including clinical engineering, estates, digital services.
