Supporting care and carers

A new book has been launched to support human factors and ergonomics professionals working in health and social care. The practical guide explains how to enhance patient safety and care experiences while also improving staff wellbeing.

Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health and Social Care, published in early May, has been written by a team of experts with decades of combined experience in the profession.

Professor Paul Bowie, Programme Directory (Safety & Improvement), NHS Education for Scotland, described the authors as “Chartered professionals who are highly experienced in related research, education and practice and have a particular focus on patient safety”.

He added: “This is a must-read for everyone with a strong interest in improving organisational performance and the welling of people who work in, and use, healthcare services.”

The book includes real-life case studies as well as practical tips to design safer workspaces, improve communication and reduce error. It aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice and support people studying the CIEHF’s Healthcare Learning Pathway and the NHS Patient Safety Syllabus.

The opening three chapters were first launched as an ebook on the CIEHF’s website and the publication was developed with the feedback from early readers in mind.
