I am Professor Emeritus of Human Factors at the University of Southampton (UK) with over 37 years’ experience in research and the practical application of Human Factors methods in a wide variety of organisations, such as: BAE Systems, British Gas Transco, BP, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, Department for Transport, Ford Motor Company, GE Aviation, Jaguar Land Rover, Ministry of Defence, National Grid (both gas and electric), Network Rail, RAC Foundation, Rolls Royce (aerospace) and RSSB.

My expertise includes the application of Human Factors methods in the design and evaluation of automation, consumer products, control rooms, flight decks, and in-vehicle systems. I have also acted as an expert witness and conducted investigations into road traffic collisions, train collisions, aircraft crashes, and other types of fatal and non-fatal incidents (such as those in healthcare, oil and gas, etc.).

I have led dozens of Human Factors projects over the past 37 years, and can provide samples of the work I have been involved in. Clients often say to me: “We came to the person who wrote the books on Human Factors methods rather than the ones who just read them”. My special skill is knowing which set of methods are most likely to help in solving a particular problem. No single method is likely to provide all the insights necessary, nor provide all of the solutions. I have yet to meet a challenge that I cannot tackle successfully.

I have authored and edited over 60 Human Factors books and over 400 high-quality, peer-reviewed, journal papers. By all available metrics, my work is world-leading:
