Introduction to Human Factors in Process Safety, Loss Prevention and COMAH (HF_PLC) course (Human Reliability)
About the course
This course provides an introduction to Human Factors in safety-critical industries, the six topic areas in the Human Factors Delivery COMAH Delivery Guide, and understanding the HSE’s Human Factors Roadmap and Safety Critical Task Analysis (SCTA).
Who should attend?
This course is suitable for individuals from both upper and lower tier COMAH sites in the UK and other global process industries (e.g. mining, oil, gas and chemical plants)
- Plant Managers
- Process Safety Specialist
- Process Plant designers
- Supervisors
- Senior process operators
- Procedures and training developers
- SHE Managers
Why should you attend?
The HF_PLC course is designed for delegates who wish to understand the importance of Human Factors within their organisations. Upon completion of the course, delegates will have awareness of how Human Factors could impact safety and efficiency and the possible solutions for improving HF gaps identified within their site.
The course includes a downloadable digital handbook which contains valuable information to prompt delegates to reflect how they can sustainably improve Human Factors.
The course is delivered by world leading Human Factors experts with over 20 years of experience in the field. There are plenty of opportunities to engage in discussions and the hands-on approach will equip you with the knowledge and skills for improving Human Factors.
Reasons for previous delegates attending:
- Management staff have attended to help prepare for HSE visits, e.g. to be more informed about HF and talk the right language.
- Some have attended to prepare for their new role as Human Factors champions at site.
- Some informed Human Factors personnel see this as a good introductory course for their colleagues new to the subject.
- Some have wanted an entry level understanding of Human Factors for Process Safety and Safety Critical Task Analysis.
- Operators and Maintenance personnel have attended to ‘see’ more Human Factors and opportunities to improve in their workplace.
- Some people have attended for a refresher after our more detailed SCTA course.
What will you learn?
The course is structured into two parts.
The first part of the course introduces Human Factors and the six key topics in the HSE’s Human Factors Delivery Guide and how organisations can meet its success criteria. The course also explores the four different types of human error and the possible strategies for reducing the chances of these error.
The second part focuses on the how organisations can use the Human Factors Roadmap to optimise human performance. We introduce the Safety Critical Task Analysis (SCTA) methodology, an effective human reliability assessment technique, and how it can be applied to enhance human performance through engineering design, procedures and competence standards.
This is an introductory course to provide an overview and awareness of Human Factors for major hazard installations. Sometimes discussions can get very detailed and specific in webinars, depending on the challenges and questions people have. However, those looking for more depth on SCTA for example, should do our dedicated SCTA course.
Expected outcomes
- Be more familiar with the Human Factors Delivery Guide for COMAH sites and the HSE’s Human Factors Roadmap.
- Understand the importance of Human Factors for managing risks associated with Major Accident Hazards.
- Be aware of the six key Human Factors topic areas and their success criteria.
- Distinguish between the different types of human failure and effective strategies for dealing with these.
- Be aware of the core Human Reliability Assessment techniques: task analysis, failure analysis and PIF analysis.
- Understand how Human Factors Safety Critical Task Analysis (SCTA) outputs can support human performance through design, procedures and competence standards.
