Human Factors in the Design and Development of Systems

This course will show you how to integrate your Human Factors Engineering knowledge and skills into the design and development of systems.

Knowledge/experience needed

You will need to have completed the course 'Human Factors Theory and Practice' in order to take this course, or have equivalent experience.

Who should attend?

Engineers, designers, or HF Specialists that are responsible for the integration of HFE into a wider system or product will benefit from this course.

Why should you attend?

A systems approach to HFE allows you to see the big picture, understanding how various elements interact within a system. This perspective is vital for the effective integration of HFE in the specification, design, assessment, and acceptance of products and services. It ensures that human considerations are not an afterthought but a fundamental component of the entire process.

What will you learn?

This course will equip you with a broad understanding of how to integrate HFE into system design and development effectively. It will prepare you to tackle complex challenges related to human-system interaction, enhance system performance and safety, and ultimately contribute to the creation of more human-centred designs. Such skills are increasingly in demand across various industries, making this knowledge highly valuable for career development or advancement.

Expected outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the 'Human Factors Integration' basis for the design and development of systems
  • Utilise a systems approach to the human aspects of the specification, design, assessment and acceptance of products, services and human factors interventions
  • Understand the requirements for safety systems, the concepts of risk, risk assessment and risk management
  • Supervise the application and evaluation of an Human Factors Integration Plan

Course content

The course has 12 modules, the first of which is available as a free sample.

The modules are:

  • System Design and Development
  • Ergonomics / Human Factors Engineering Principles
  • Human Factors Integration
  • Early Human Factors Analysis
  • Human Factors Integration Plan
  • Human Factors Requirements Setting
  • Human Factors Issues Register
  • HFE Analysis and Design
  • Human-Related System Safety
  • Human Factors Testing
  • Introduction to Service
  • In-Service Review

Assessment

This course has three assignments that should take you 2-3 hours each to complete. The assignments will be marked and reviewed by the Instructor, who will give you feedback on your progress. A pass mark is required on each assignment before the course can be completed.

Each module has an 'open book' test which requires an 80% pass mark in order to proceed to the next stage of the course.

At the end of the course, a certificate of completion will be awarded.

What’s included?

The modules are entirely on-line and self-paced, and are supported by video lectures, written notes, case studies, and interactive exercises.

You will be assigned a personal tutor from Liv Systems consultancy when you enrol on the course. Interaction with the tutor is encouraged: you will be provided with an initial orientation call where the tutor will understand what you want to get out of the course. Follow-up messages and questions are encouraged and on-line question and answer sessions are to be expected, so that you can develop your expertise.
