Shoring up safety

Safety campaigners are highlighting the importance of human factors in the offshore industry with a three month focus on raising awareness and understanding of the discipline and its benefits.

Step Change in Safety has developed a library of resources covering a range of topics, from leadership and training to risk assessment and communication. There’s also an online assessment tool, ‘Human Factors: How to take the next steps’, to help oil and gas workers explore where their company could be doing more.

Step in Change in Safety works to improve safety in the UK offshore industry and focuses on a new theme for each quarter of the year. The Human Factors and Performance topic is under the spotlight in the second quarter of this year.

As well as the downloadable resources, there are also webinars running throughout the three months and the organisation is also supported by its own Human Factors Workgroup. Dr Marcin Nazaruk, co-chair of the group, said: “Human factors has the potential to take our safety, quality and efficiency to the next level. This quarter we are focusing on 12 human factors topics aligned with UK regulatory and contractual requirements.”
