From Startle to Simulator: Student Studies in Aviation Human Factors

We'll be hearing from two talented students from Cranfield University as they present their research in aviation:

  • Charles Njoku will explore his research on Wickens’ Multiple Resource Theory in practice and its implications for future flight deck interface design. Charles has developed a lightweight web‑based simulator, FLIDIS (Flight Deck Interaction Simulator), to compare different interaction properties and input styles, such as continuous slider input, discrete keypad input, and hands‑free (speech‑to‑text) input, for tactical data entry on a primary flight display. The study will quantify how these interaction properties influence pilot‑like performance and perceived workload in dual‑task scenarios.
  • Abigail Gregory will explore how startle and high-workload conditions affect pilot attention and task prioritisation in single-pilot operations, and the implications for aviation safety and system design.

Whether you work in aviation or not, this session will provide an opportunity to network, share ideas and experiences associated with human factors.
