Using Participatory Design in Defence
Our speaker, Dave McNeish, will be presenting on his experience of using Participatory Design in defence. He will reflect on how a variety of human factors and User Experience (UX) methods can be combined to actively involve users within the design process, the benefits of doing so, and key takeaways for human factors practitioners.
Dave is a Chartered Human Factors Specialist at User Centric Design with over a decade of experience working at the intersection between humans and technology, primarily in defence and wider government.
His previous experience working for the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) saw him leading and delivering human factors research across land, air and maritime domains. This included a varied mix of human factors work ranging from anthropometric studies on armoured vehicles, to assessment of soldier equipment, to participatory design of aircraft user interfaces. In recent years Dave led a small team of researchers focussed on human-centred Artificial Intelligence, helping the Ministry of Defence (MOD) grapple with the associated policy, legal and ethical challenges.
This led to him applying human factors in some unconventional places, including working as a visiting researcher at the Alan Turing Institute (the UK's national institute for data science and AI), working for the government's Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, and representing the UK MOD at the United Nations.
We look forward to having a lively discussion afterwards.
