Nuclear Safety Inspector – Human Factors
Salary: £77,942 - £93,606 (plus £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable) + generous benefits
Loction: Bootle, Cheltenham, London
The challenge
Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety and security across the UK. Our Inspectors are on the frontline, using their skills to ensure that the nuclear industry controls its hazards effectively. This role is as challenging as it is rewarding and it is your chance to make an impact where it really matters.
The role
We’re looking for credible Nuclear Safety Inspectors who specialise in Human Factors. Human Factors make a significant contribution to nuclear safety throughout a facility's lifecycle, so you can expect a busy remit that’s hugely varied and interesting - from assessing designs for new facilities, safety case submissions, inspecting facilities and testing compliance, right through to investigating events.
Here, you’ll be highly influential. We’ll look to you to take ownership and use your judgement to make complex decisions, and communicate them confidently at all levels. But you’ll also know when to ask for support - there’s a dedicated, multi-disciplinary team around you that are ready to share their knowledge, skills and perspectives. With such a wide range of challenges, you can build on your experience while keeping people safe and making an impact UK-wide and beyond.
The person
Our Inspectors come from a variety of backgrounds with experience of nuclear or high-hazard-related industries, but all demonstrate calm and poise when working under pressure in one of the most demanding jobs in the public sector.
You’ll have the credibility to hit the ground running, with experience of the assessment and production of Human Factors safety cases and reports for the nuclear, high-hazard or highly-regulated industries. With a unique blend of technical expertise and great people skills, you’ll be able to make sound, proportionate judgements on the significance of Human Factors issues as they relate to overall risk and influence licensees and other stakeholders. This role is as unique as you are and you’ll enjoy extensive training, along with opportunities to continue to develop, expand and deepen your skills and knowledge.
The rewards
We offer competitive salaries at ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £71,033 - £85,309 (plus £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable). Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a generous holiday entitlement.
About us

And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, communicating our decisions, training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR within the wider international nuclear community.
